As we approach a full year since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, I've been reflecting on the many difficult, and sometimes painful, events that have occurred and the responsibility we have as a business community to stand up for our values and address violence, hatred and discrimination.
Over the course of the past year, and particularly the last several weeks, we've witnessed an unacceptable increase in violent hate crimes and xenophobic rhetoric against the Asian community. This is a community that has experienced racism and exclusion throughout our history, yet is often overlooked when leaders talk about building a more inclusive and equitable society.
We cannot tolerate racism, hate or discrimination of any kind. We have an obligation to take a stand against this violence and to support those who have been affected. I've spoken out many times about PayPal's commitment to the fight for racial justice and equality, and we will keep doing so. PayPal stands with our Asian employees and Asian communities around the world. Together with Rise, PayPal's employee resource group for Pan-Asian employees and allies, we will work to support the Asian community during this time of vulnerability and need.
