Cultural Evolution: Changing from the inside-out

It's a fascinating time to be working in tech. Innovation is rapid fire - industries are being turned on their head - but so are companies themselves.

Open floor plans are now commonplace, creating spaces for us to collaborate and inspire. And the ability to expose inspiration and passion in the workplace is a powerful tool.

Today we sat down with Julia Hartz, Eventbrite co-founder and president, to talk about the dynamic world of company culture. Julia is an inspiring leader; it's no surprise she's recently been on lists such as Fortune and Inc. for her vision and drive.

During our conversation, she shared how she breaks down the necessity to nurture the culture we work in. She described an ability to support your employees and enable them to thrive by creating a space in which they feel a supportive community around them.

We also discussed the challenges of scale and the need to allow flexibility as your culture and your company character evolves. Julia reminded us that it's about the Why. Why do you do what you do? Companies need to think about and be clear in communicating why they exist. We need to have purpose and we need to work knowing we contribute to making finance more inclusive, thus making lives of people around the world a little bit easier.

It was fascinating to hear the impact of opening up the conversation -- the personalities in the room helping to shape the character of an entire company. We have an opportunity to shape PayPal as a stand alone company to be more supportive and more inclusive and we are off to a great start.
