Enabling More Mobile Payments In Partnership With Google

Update: As of 29 July 2024, customers will need to replace their PayPal payment method to continue checking out online with the Google Pay button (except for online purchases at the Google Store or other Google properties). Customers can add a PayPal branded debit or credit card to their Google Wallet and continue earning cash back and rewards on eligible purchases.

At PayPal, we know that money is personal. That’s why we’re committed to putting choice into the hands of our customers – to pay how and where they want to pay and get paid with the speed and convenience of PayPal. Over the past year, we’ve been expanding our partnerships to offer new ways to pay in more places -- in mobile apps, online and in-store and across new contexts. Today, we’re excited to announce that we are extending our partnership with Google to make it easy for consumers to use PayPal as a payment method in Android Pay wherever Android Pay is accepted, in-store, in-app and online.

Coming soon, consumers in the U.S. will be able to use PayPal in Android Pay at retailers from Walgreens to Dunkin' Donuts. This partnership will enable our customers to pay across even more contexts, and will extend PayPal’s mobile leadership and reach as consumers become more comfortable shopping and buying on their mobile devices. Last year alone, PayPal processed $102 billion in mobile payment volume and two billion mobile payment transactions. Initially, users will be able to pay using their PayPal balance and over the coming months we will add the ability to use cards that have been stored with PayPal, enabled by our recent tokenization partnerships with major card networks.

PayPal and Google have been forging a strong partnership since PayPal was added as a payment method within Google Play nearly three years ago and we’re excited for this next phase of our relationship. With our combined reach and leadership in technology and mobile commerce, we can bring more choice and optionality to our joint customers.

The PayPal integration with Android Pay is supported on versions of Android OS 4.4 and higher, including KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow and Nougat.

On the heels of our partnerships with Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Citi, FIS and others, we’re excited to announce we’re expanding our relationship with Wells Fargo to soon enable our joint customers to pay with their Wells Fargo credit or debit card for contactless payments in-store. These partnerships are just a few examples of how PayPal is continuing to work with leaders in the industry to enable more choice, flexibility and transparency for our customers.

We will continue to forge new collaborations to expand our services and reach, explore new contexts, increase conversion for our merchants, create better mobile experiences and give our consumers the flexibility, security and speed that digital payments can offer.
