No matter where you are in the world, safe water is a fundamental human need and is considered a basic human right by the United Nations. Water is vital for food production and daily hydration, but it’s also important to note that sanitation is equally as important as polluted water can lead to behavioral and learning problems among children and even deadly diseases like cholera dysentery affecting people of all ages.
In September 2000, 189 countries came together at the United Nations Millennium Summit and signed the millennium declaration – a historical blueprint outlining eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with measurable targets and clear deadlines to combat issues like poverty and environmental degradation, with a mission to improve the planet and the lives of the world’s poorest people. In the 2015 update and MDG assessment on sanitation and drinking water, the
World Health Organization and
UNICEF found that 1 in 10 people in the world lack access to clean water*.
Dating back to 1992, World Water Day is an international observance and an opportunity for people around the world to learn more about water-related issues and give to organizations that are helping to bring clean water to those in need. In the U.S., many of us take access to clean water for granted as we use it for drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing and more without thinking twice. But the recent water crisis in
Flint, MI and lead contamination in
Newark, NJ school water fountains proves that access to clean water is not just an issue in underdeveloped countries and people everywhere should be aware of the harm unsanitary water can do to people near and far.
In support of World Water Day,
PayPal is inviting consumers to donate to three charities dedicated to providing clean and safe drinking water to people all over the world:
